Relax This Weekend With These Shows
The last two weeks have been one a lot and you probably need some rest. Here are some shows worth checking out.
The last two weeks have been a lot, haven’t they? I mean, for those of us that were glued to the election, we were probably white-knuckling. Or, maybe I’m just projecting. Maybe the rest of you were very chill and normal about it. I kid, very few of us were and for good reason. I digress, the weekend is here, and if you are looking for some shows to watch, here are some that I have been enjoying.
If you want to get right to the recommendations scroll pass this paragraph. For the rest of you, I once took a look at the streaming services and ranked them. At the time, my top-tier rankings were Disney+, HBO Max (now called Max), Hulu, and Apple TV+. I largely still agree with this, but if I had to knock one out, I would say get rid of Max. However, since my initial ranking, you can now throw Max into the Disney+/Hulu+ bundle. So, you might as well do that and get the access to the Warner library and TCM.
If we’re going strictly by quality, I think it’s fair to say Hulu and Apple TV+ are the best streaming platforms right now. The FX on Hulu library, in particular, is under-appreciated.
Okay, on to the recommendations…
Hulu+
I really, truly loved English Teacher. First and foremost, it is very well written and is very funny. The performances are really wonderful. I have already gone back to a few episodes to watch them again (specifically since last week when I needed a distraction).
As you can see from the trailer, it’s also willing to make fun of progressives a bit. It is similar to Hacks1 in that sense. The main character is very idealistic and is frequently clashing with characters who are not at all. Yet, it doesn’t condescend to anybody.
Apple TV+
There are two great shows on Apple TV+ worth checking out, and they are both from Bill Lawrence. Between these two shows and Ted Lasso, the man is basically the Ryan Murphy of Apple TV+.
Do you like Vince Vaughn? Do you like detective stories? Do you like ensemble comedies/dramas? Well, then my friend, I highly recommend Bad Monkey. It’s got everything I mentioned PLUS Tom Petty covers and a beautiful location.
The other show is Shrinking. It’s got Jason Segel, Harrison Ford, and Jessica Williams giving career-best performances. When I say Harrison Ford is giving a career-best performance, in a career full of them, I think you should check it out.
Netflix
Listen, I’m as surprised as anybody that I found something not called Stranger Things that I truly enjoyed on Netflix. Yet, Nobody Wants This is great. It’s a romantic comedy TV show with the wildly charismatic Adam Brody and Kristen Bell as the leads.
So there you go, something to check out this weekend for some much-needed rest.
Oh, before I sign off for the weekend, here is a bit of a programming note. My intention is to turn this little slice of the Internet into a place for my musings on politics and movies/TV. Ideally, I’m putting out something on politics on Tuesday and something on movies/TV on Friday. If that sounds cool to you and you want to subscribe, I’d be happy to have you. If you are just dropping in, cool. I appreciate you stopping by. If this is the first and last time you ever read it, thanks for checking it out. I’m just having fun doing a bit of writing to keep my mind off of things.
A great show on Max.
